Rogue Valley CBD Hemp Flower and the Emerald Triangle

The Emerald Triangle of South Oregon and northern California offer some of the finest growing climates in North America. Farmers have flocked there for generations to take advantage of good soil and weather to farm fruits and vegetables, and the hemp grown there is some of the best in the world.

A field of green hemp

It’s a special area, with a Mediterranean climate that is perfect for many crops. Today’s blog post is about this magical region, also known as the Green or Emerald Triangle.

What is Special About the Triangle

Not all environments are created equally. Some areas have just the right combination of minerals, sun, and weather necessary to make certain crops flourish. For hemp growers, that means they can depend on bountiful harvests and nurture plants that deliver trophy-winning flower season after season. The Triangle region of California and Oregon is one of those areas.

Where is the Triangle?

The Triangle is composed of Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity counties in California, and Josephine and Jackson counties, which include the Rogue Valley, in Oregon. It is a geographically diverse area with many scattered microclimates that provide unique growing conditions. This environment helps to make products like Rogue Valley CBD special.

Environmental Factors and the Rogue Valley

The key environmental factors that help make the Emerald Triangle in Oregon, and especially the Rogue Valley area, special to growers include temperature, water, sunlight, and soil.

Temperature

Warm days and cool nights make perfect growing conditions for hemp. A predictable weather pattern offers knowledgeable growers endless opportunities to fine-tune growing conditions to match their cultivars.

Water

It’s just a little drier than the national average here. The average rainfall in California is around 22 inches a year, and 27 inches a year in Oregon, less than the average rainfall across the US (30 inches). This is not a problem for drought-resistant crops like hemp. Of course, microclimates across the Emerald Triangle, like Humboldt County (55 inches), may have more or less precipitation.

Sun

Depending on where you live, the Green Triangle gets an average of 177 days of sun in Humboldt County, CA, and 195 in Medford, OR. This is plenty of natural sunlight for producing top-quality products like premium hemp CBD flower. Rogue Valley farms are bathed in this natural bounty and growers take full advantage of what it has to offer.

Soil

Soil in the Oregon Emerald Triangle is a major asset to operations at Rogue Origin and other hemp farms, and the type of soil differs depending on where you are.

The majority of the Triangle contains acidic soils with low macronutrients (ultisols), slightly acidic forest soils with more nutrients (alfisols), and the remnants of fertile grasslands (mollisols), a blend that works well for many different crops.

The Rogue Valley is different. It lacks a meaningful concentration of mollisols and instead contains inceptisols, a fertile mountainous soil. This soil is unique in the Emerald Triangle and may be why hemp flower from Rogue Valley farms has such great benefits.

Social, Political, and Regulatory Landscapes

The Triangle region has seen gold rush days, big timber, and a population rush that began with disaffected individuals and hippies in the 1960s who wanted to live organically, off the grid, or just out of the reach of society. Many of them set up farms to support themselves. Cottage industries sprang up all over the Emerald Triangle in Oregon and California.

The area has been a magnet for independent-minded political movements, including the Jefferson State movement, which sought to carve out a new state composed of parts of south Oregon and northern California. It failed, but the spirit lives on.

Other significant events that have made a major impact on the region include changes to laws governing cannabis and hemp.

  • 1973 - Oregon became the first state to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana.
  • 1998 - The Oregon Medical Marijuana Act (OMMA) passed. Patients could possess up to an ounce and grow their own plants in Oregon’s Emerald Triangle or elsewhere, or designate a grower.
  • 2005 - Changes to OMMA increased the amount of cannabis a person can possess and grow.
  • 2012 - Changes to the law allowed for the creation of a registered dispensary network for medical marijuana users and reduced penalties for possession.
  • 2014 - Recreational marijuana became legal in the state
  • 2014 - Revisions to the Federal Farm Bill defined industrial hemp and distinguished it from cannabis. It became legal to farm industrial hemp in the Rogue Valley for CBD and other products for research purposes.
  • 2018 - Revisions to the Federal Farm Bill removed hemp from the list of controlled substances, and made hemp farming legal.

Economic Impact of the Emerald Triangle

The market for hemp and cannabis is currently on a downturn but there are still profits to be made by good growers. While a black market in cannabis makes it difficult to pin down the exact worth of the industry to Oregon and specific areas like the Rogue Valley, it is safe to say it brings in millions of dollars a year.

According to one analysis from the Oregon Employment Department, recreational marijuana sales amounted to $6.95 billion between the period of October 2016 and September 2024. In 2022 alone, the market brought in $170 million in taxes to the state and currently employs more than 7,000 individuals. A lot of research, development, and production occurs in Oregon’s Emerald Triangle region.
